I am fascinated by art found in nature. I love the strong triad color scheme of red, yellow and blue in this slab of stone. One name for this particular stone from Brazil is Van Gogh.

I also like 3D art. This is my abstraction of this stone and how the red, yellow and blue elements would be idealized if they were to take on a 3D form: a spark of red with red veins throughout, a soft flowing yellow form and a stable, solid blue background represented by the cube shape.

This glass art work is by Dale Chihuly. As I read the Basic Terms list I realized that I am drawn to intricate, delicate twisted shapes. Flamboyant certainly describes the flame shape of this work and it also describes Chihuly's personality. I had only heard the term used to describe a person and not really as an architectural style.

I love the stone. I think some of the best art is found in nature. Did you see the Chihuly exhibit last fall at the de Young?
ReplyDeleteI love the glass work, what a beautiful piece, my cousin blows glass and we have been to a few of her shows, it is beautiful and each piece unique.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris,
ReplyDeleteWhere can you find that stone? I am taking a sculpture class and working with alabaster. My piece has raspberry and green stripes in it. I wonder how hard the Van Gogh stone is? I was at the De Young 2 weeks agonand saw Chihulys Green Leaf Venetian and Rovers Garden. Fabulous! I did not realize it was the same artist as the picture of his work in our text book until you put this on your blog page. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI took lots of photos when I saw the exhibit in July.

The stone slab is also called Blue Louise and is a quartzite (harder than granite). I used it for my kitchen island.

ReplyDeleteNice selection, I tried to go to the Chihuly exhibit at the De Young but it was SOLD OUT- boo hoo. Some of his stuff is very beautiful. You would love the Murano glass museum in Italy!
Thanks Chris for the update on the stone.. suppose I wont try that any time soon! I was just in China Town today for the New Years events. There is a store right at the Lion Gate that has Chihuly inspired works.. lamps, hanging lights and some glass wall hangings. They are very nice.
